Ninth Annual Conference and General Meeting, Tokyo, Japan, 2 – 6 August 2010

The 9th Annual Conference of Asia-Europe Foundation's University Alumni Network (ASEFUAN) took place in Tokyo between 3. – 5. August 2010. E C O [logical] was the slogan of the 2010 Annual Conference, which focused on the topic “Creative Innovations for Future Sustainable Societies”. The conference explored opportunities and innovative ideas for young professionals and emerging leaders to participate in future discussions related to climate change and sustainable societies. The Annual Conference was followed by the one-day General Meeting and the very popular post-AGM activities.

Theme

The core part of the E C O [logical] event was a three day conference (3-5 August) that brought together not only members of the ASEFUAN network but a wide array of young experts from various fields to discuss and exchange views on issues of mutual concern in Asia-Europe relations with a special focus on ecology and sustainability.

Every year the main theme of ASEFUAN conference is carefully selected to give members of the ASEFUAN and wider audience the possibility to share their views among their colleagues in other countries and, by doing so, obtaining new insights, ideas and solutions to pressing issues of the moment.

Suffice to say, issues related to environment and sustainable societies are in the center of global concern – environmental issues are inherently linked to notions about sustainability. Societies need to face these issues and tackle the challenges they pose together. Thus sharing information, ideas, and views with people from different countries and representing different disciplines is extremely important – sustainability can indeed be explored and approached from multiple points of views.

The E C O [logical] conference took place in this context: it explored opportunities and innovative ideas for young professionals and emerging leaders to participate in the future discussions concerning the climate change and sustainable societies. Besides having lectures, workshops and presentations the conference sought to achieve its aims by creative ways, e.g. including cultural activities. For example, the Japanese traditional Noh theatre brought the participants an opportunity to face the issue altogether since Noh theatre’s main idea is living in harmony with the nature.

The ASEFUAN Conference in 2010, E C O [logical], brought together young professionals representing public and private sectors, academia, civil society and arts & culture field to (i) share their experiences & ideas and to (ii) discuss and find innovative solutions for climate change and sustainability related issues across Asia and Europe.
