Sixteenth ASEF University, Lodz, Poland, 29 June - 10 July 2010
ASEF and the Medical University of Lodz (UMED) are pleased with the successful conclusion of the 16th edition of the ASEF University which was held from 29 June to 10 July 2010 in Lodz, Poland. A selection of very enthusiastic young individuals from Asia and Europe participated in the programme with the theme Public Health and Vulnerable Groups: Access to Quality Healthcare Services.
Participants had the opportunity to share their knowledge and views on specific health-based topics of relevance for both regions. They explored possible approaches to tackle the barriers to health disparities in a way which encourages and acknowledges their participation. The programme included, among others, discussions on public health issues from a multi-perspective approach – and mainly aimed to empower the participants to:
- Understand public health issues and challenges from the perspectives of Asia and Europe
- Promote discussion on how reducing barriers to quality healthcare services can be addressed
- Encourage young people to play an active role in promoting better health
This edition of ASEF University featured the ASEM process and integration in both regions, whilst emphasising the Asian and European perspectives on key global health challenges to our societies that often require cross border solutions and international co-operation. The question of vulnerability was discussed and addressed in this context. The varied background of the participants contributed to the successful dialogue and interesting discussions, and included students and professionals active in the fields of International relations, Asian and European Studies, Development Studies, Public Health, Medicine, Human Rights, Economics & Finance, Political and Social Sciences.
The ASEF University is held annually, at locations alternating between Europe and Asia, and is open to youths from the ASEM countries. Participants are usually not more than 25 years old and should preferably be in their final undergraduate year or first graduate year. Successful applicants should have strong academic credentials and established leadership skills through involvement in extra-curricular activities.
